BC Hockey Associations to Host The First Shift Program
Wednesday, May 25, 2016
Fourteen (14) BC Hockey Minor Hockey Associations (MHAs) across the province have been selected to host The First Shift Program. The program is a recruitment initiative that will help Associations and Hockey Canada Branches grow their membership by breaking down the barriers normally associated with playing hockey by making the sport safe and accessible to all Canadians.
The following MHAs have been selected:
Fall Program – 45 participant program
Fall Program – 30 participant program
100 Mile House
Winter Program – 45 participant program
The First Shift is a learn-to-play hockey program for kids aged 6 – 10. With an emphasis on fun, the program allows kids to easily try hockey for $199, which includes enrollment for a six (6) week on-ice curriculum and head-to-toe Bauer equipment that each child can keep. The initiative began in 2012 with four (4) pilot programs in Ontario and Nova Scotia, and expanded the following year to 40 and doubled to 80 programs in the 2015-2016 season.
The First Shift was created with the goal of creating an exceptional first experience in hockey not only for young players, but for their entire family.
Based on surveys of families and parents who children participated in The First Shift, 86 per cent of participants re-enrolled into hockey in The First Shift Transition Program, 100 percent of parents said their kids had fun and 100 per cent of parents would recommend the program to a friend.
